- Assembly discovers there is no way to press or weld from behind.
- Nobody has the supplier’s grip-range or sheet-hardness data at hand to judge alternatives.
- The program re-opens the drawing, requests new quotes and waits for samples.
- Pilot builds slip weeks, and the panel may need rework of holes already punched.
- Decide once, correctly: match the installation method to panel accessibility before the hole pattern is fixed.

Decision rules you can apply today
Work down the list and stop at the first rule that matches:

- Condition: both sides accessible and the panel sees repeated assembly. Self-clinching nut wins on torque and durability; pick type by sheet hardness – the CLS nut specification shows the HRB 50 / HB 82 boundary.
- Condition: cosmetic outer face. Both families can sit flush – self-clinching F types and countersunk rivet nuts – but clinching leaves no setting marks on the reverse.
- Boundary: sheet harder than the clinch limit or thicker than ~3 mm. Stop comparing; move to weld nuts or flow-drill processes.
De-risk before the hole pattern is fixed
The comparison on paper is not the proof. Before locking the drawing: confirm sheet hardness against the type limit, confirm hole size and tolerance from the supplier’s chart, and install samples with the actual production tooling – torque to spec, then check for spin-out or pull-through.
